A Sneak Peak into Third Grade




Social Studies
Students researched the explorers, settlers, and others who continued to come to the region, including their cultural and religious traditions and contributions. Students learned about the community of San Mateo and an American hero, Juan Bautista de Anza. A focus question was: Who were some of the early European explorers in California, and how did their exploration affect our state?


For the next two weeks, students will research the reasons why newcomers and early settlers wanted to make Californai their home. They will also describe the economies established by settlers and their influence on the present day economy. Students will learn about Napa and an American hero, John Sutter. 
Focus Question: Who were some of the early settlers in early California, and how did they make money?


Science
Our science focus is matter. Everything in the world is made up of matter. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

In math students are learning about fractions. Students will understand the relationship between whole numbers, simple fractions, and decimals. Students will compare fractions represented by drawings or concrete materials to show equal fractions and to add and subtract simple fractions.

Language Arts
In language arts, students made word maps. A word map shows what the word means, examples of the word, and non-examples of the word. Students also read and acted out the play Melt the Snow!  In addition, students learned how to write a script.

Our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ brings us together. As Catholics we are also brought together by the Sacraments, which make our faith strong. Students will understand that Scripture reveals that we are called together to live as Christans. For Reflection: Consider what you can do to feel more connected to your friends, your family and others in your community.
